newsletter winter 2011

Welcome to my Spring Newsletter 2013

After a thoroughly wet winter, the daffodils are budding, new lambs are arriving and spring is welcome at Tyddyn Iolyn! The year is shaping up to be a busy one already and I am pleased that Kim and Meleri will join me once again to welcome our guests.

The usual maintenance and building work has been carried out at Tyddyn Iolyn in the quieter winter months and this year The Stable and Guest Dining Room have been improved and redecorated.

Tyddyn Iolyn continues to be busy with UK and overseas guests, and Kim and Meleri are both still on board to help!

This spring I tried out a few more local attractions and activities which I can recommend to my guests. The Llechwedd slate caverns deep underground at Blaenau are well worth a visit and I thoroughly enjoyed a fast Rib Ride along the Menai Straits to Puffin Island.

I recently tried fly fishing for the first time at Eisteddfa lakes just half a mile away from Tyddyn Iolyn and am now tempted to have a go at some sea fishing…..

Small independent businesses which contribute to the unique character of this part of Wales continue to thrive in the Criccieth/ Porthmadog area. The Purple Moose Brewery (Bragdy Mws Piws) started brewing real ale in Porthmadog in 1995 and this year has won seven awards with Society of Independent Brewers) coming in the top 114 out of 7400 entries in the Great Taste Award 2012. The business is now expanding.

The Bed and Breakfast business has been busy again this year, and many of my guests have become regular visitors. It is wonderful to see so many friends returning and thank you all for your custom! Projects at Tyddyn lolyn continue and hopefully the farmhouse will move into the 21st century with the addition of wi-fi in 2012. Lovely though it is to 'get away from it all' I do appreciate that many of my guests require this facility.

The A487 Porthmadog bypass was completed in October (seven weeks early) and there was an opportunity to walk along the full length from Tremadog to Minffordd before it was officially opened. The surrounding mountain views are stunning and
the traditional dry stone walls along the route are beautifully constructed.

The general consensus is that the bypass will have a positive effect on the businesses and retailers of Porthmadog and it will certainly ease congestion in the town. Portmeirion is now a mere 10 minutes drive from Tyddyn lolyn!

After an exceptionally prolonged cold spell in December, Tyddyn Iolyn enjoyed some lovely early spring sunshine in March and the surrounding fields are full of lambs again.

Bookings continue to be good and Kim and Meleri will join me again for what appears to be shaping up to be another busy season ahead. Once again thank you to them both and to all of my guests for your continued support.

During the winter 'The Bakehouse' was completely reroofed, rewired and refurbished and is now decorated a more tasteful shade of cream. The four-poster bed has been replaced and the room now seems a lot more spacious although 1 hope has retained its cosy atmosphere.

It's been another busy spring and summer season at Tyddyn Iolyn and a big thank you to all my guests for contributing to its success. My visitors have come from far and wide, including Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the States, Scandinavia, South Africa, Hong Kong, all over Europe and of course the UK.

Having taken part in a dendrochronology project dating old Welsh houses, I now have documentary evidence for the existence of Tyddyn Iolyn back to the Land Tax records of 1771 and parish registers of 1767.

Welcome to my first newsletter, which I hope will be of interest to both new friends and frequent visitors to Tyddyn Iolyn.

The Bed and Breakfast enjoyed a successful and busy year in 2009 and I'd like to thank all of my regular guests for their continuing support.
